What happens when your ChatGPT usage limit resets

ChatGPT doesn't run on a single limit that fills up and empties once — it tracks two usage windows at the same time, and they reset on their own separate schedules.

The two windows

• Session — a short window, typically around 5 hours, that covers your immediate back-and-forth.
• Weekly — a longer window, around 7 days, that caps how much you can use overall for the week. Not every plan reports one; some show only the session window.

They run independently. Your session window can reset several times before your weekly one ever does.

What actually happens at reset

Nothing changes about your account or your past conversations — the percentage-used counter for that window simply goes back to 0%, and you get the same allowance again for the next window. A session reset doesn't touch the weekly counter, and vice versa.

Where to check it yourself

ChatGPT shows usage in its own account settings, but which windows you see there depends on your plan — some accounts only ever see the session one.
